What Is 49 CFR Training?

49 CFR training is a certified course for people involved in the shipment of hazardous materials by road or surface. All HAZMAT workers must take 49 CFR training. 

A HAZMAT employee is defined as anyone who, in the course of full-time, part-time, or temporary employment, directly affects hazardous materials transportation safety. A HAZMAT employer must ensure that all HAZMAT employees are trained within 90 days of starting employment or starting a new position. Training must be repeated at least once every three years.

All HAZMAT employees, regardless of their specific functions, must have General Awareness/ Familiarization Training. This 49 CFR training provides familiarity with the general requirements of the Hazardous Materials Regulations for Transportation and enables the hazmat employee to recognize and identify hazardous materials.

Additional Safety Training Requirements

All HAZMAT employees must also receive safety training. This is training that covers the hazards presented by hazardous materials, safe handling, emergency response information, and methods and procedures for accident avoidance.

All HAZMAT employees must also be given function-specific and security training. These are specific to the workplace and the employee’s role.
